Travel Reflection: November 2014

Looking back on this ten-day journey through the heart of Tamil Nadu, the sheer scale of the heritage we witnessed is staggering. Covering 51 temples across Tiruchy, Mayiladuthurai, and the "Temple Town" of Kumbakonam provided more than just a spiritual itinerary; it was a deep dive into the architectural and mythological soul of the Chola and Nayakar dynasties.

The contrast between the grand, sprawling complexes like Srirangam and the quiet, tucked-away gems like Banapureeswarar (which required a bit of persistence and a visit to the priest's home!) made the experience truly authentic. From the unique "froth-made" Vellai Pillayar to the color-changing Lingam at Thirunallur, each site held a story that felt as alive today as it did centuries ago.

The logistics—the suburban trains from Chennai Egmore, the early morning cab rides through the Pacific-like greenery of the Kaveri delta, and the rhythmic "temple hours"—became a part of the pilgrimage itself. This trip wasn't just about the darshans, but about the patience and devotion required to seek them out.

— A Pilgrimage to Remember —
